Before Batman, there was Joker
The pick of the bunch and leading the way with the most nominations we've started with 2019's dark DC that is joker. In Gotham’s fractured society, a young man longs to be a stand-up comic, but finds the joke is always on him. Caught in a cycle of apathy, cruelty and ultimately, betrayal, the comedian makes one bad decision after another, bringing about a chain reaction of escalating events. Joaquin Phoenix's performance was dark, eery, and masterful. It's no surprise that he is the leading favourite for best male performance. With Robert De Niro involved as the controversial show host Murray, this film certainly has a star studded cast which only adds more to the appeal to watch it on the big screen. Joker is out in cinemas and selected streaming services now and we highly recommend it.
Ford vs Ferrari
Matt Damon and Christian Bale in one movie? What's not to love! A David vs Goliath story depicting the racing history and battles of Ford trying to overtake Ferrari in the 1960's this film is a must for racing car enthusiasts around the world. In short the film sees visionary auto designer Carroll Shelby and race car driver Ken Miles team up to build a high-performance race car for the Ford Motor Company, hoping to defy the odds and defeat the dominant Ferrari at the 1966 Le Mans. From start to finish don't miss a moment when you view this film at Odeon cinemas as you can get cashback by booking your tickets online through Widilo.
Immerse yourself in The Irishman
Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci reunite alongside Al Pacino to deliver one of 2019's best movies. If you like Scorses's previous films such as Taxi Driver, Raging Bull and Goodfella's then you have to watch The Irishman. Released on Netflix and selected cinemas fans are treated to a 3 hour movie epic which depicts the life of Frank Sheeran. As an old man, World War II veteran Frank Sheeran (Robert De Niro) reflects on his life as a hustler and mob hitman, working alongside many notorious figures, including Jimmy Hoffa, the subject of one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in American history. The film was released towards the latter end of 2019 but is still in contention to win other awards such as cinematography and film editing.
Imaginative and fun? Watch Jojo Rabbit
With big names like Scarlett Johansson, Sam Rockwell and Rebel Wilson alongside British favourites Steve Merchant and Alfie Allen, Jojo Rabbit is a breath of fresh air when compared to other films nominated for best picture. During World War II, a lonely German boy’s world is turned upside down when he discovers his single mother is hiding a young Jewish girl in their attic. Aided only by his idiotic imaginary friend Adolf Hitler, Jojo must confront his blind nationalism. The film is delightful, fun and creative with a humorous twist on the bleakness of the war. If you're looking for a comedy drama to cheer you up then Jojo Rabbit is certainly a great watch.
For fans of Meryl Streep and Emma Watson then Little Women, with the portrayal of women in the late 19th century will be a great film to watch. Set in the late 1860s, burgeoning author Jo March looks back on her and her three sisters’ Massachusetts childhoods and the events and relationships that helped shape them as adults. The film is certainly more appealing to those wishing to watch a drama and the acting from everyone involved is sublime. Catch Little Women in selected cinemas and streaming services such as Amazon today.
2019 was certainly Scarlett Johansson's year and Marriage Story is no exception when it comes to showcasing her amazing acting talents. Alongside Adam Driver (nominated for best male performance) these two deliver powerful, emotive scenes, which to some people feel relatable. In short the film is about a young creative couple and their son navigating the tricky waters of bicoastal separation and impending divorce. It may be a deep drama that takes it's toll on the viewer and we understand that it may not be everyones choice to watch, but the acting alone deserves for the film to be seen and which is probably why both of them are dark horses to win their respective categories. Catch it on Netflix today after you finish work or save it for a cosy day in on the weekend.
Cleaning up at the Bafta's and certainly a film to rival Joker in other categories, Sam Mendes (Director of the recent, successful James Bond movies) has created a visually stunning movie that needs to be watched just for some of the fascinating and creative war scenes alone. From a story told by Sam Mendes's own grandfather, the film is set in World War I, where two British soldiers are sent on a dangerous mission to stop an attack by the British 7th Division that will result in a massacre by the Germans. Their assignment takes on extra urgency as one of the young soldiers’ brothers is fighting in that Division. Tense, nail-biting, harrowing scenes and battles are spread throughout this film in surreal detail. If you like Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk, or even Saving Private Ryan, then watch 1917 at selected Odeon Cinemas today and get cashback when you book online through Widilo.
Where do we start? Quentin Tarantino's penultimate film and a star studded cast including Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie ensures that a great storyline is also portrayed through the finest talent Hollywood has to offer. Set In Los Angeles in 1969, ageing TV star Rick Dalton and his longtime stunt double Cliff Booth struggle to make their way around an industry and a city they hardly recognise anymore. A comedy drama that includes a scene with the infamous Bruce Lee that pits himself against Booth (Brad Pitt) this film takes you on a journey through the whacky film industry within Hollywood. Find Once upon a time...in Hollywood in selected Odeon Cinemas today and earn cashback when you book your tickets online through Widilo.
Our personal favourite, you have to watch Parasite!
International films often get overlooked at the Oscars, or don't get the recognition they deserve. However after Bong Joon Ho's success with Snow piercer, as well as other great South Korean films to emerge such as The Wailing and Train to Busan, Parasite is certainly one of the favourites to win best picture. In short, the film is about greed, class discrimination and a mysterious interloper that threatens the newly formed symbiotic relationship between the wealthy Park family and the destitute Kim clan. With it's mind-boggling twist and turns, this film flips genres that ultimately results in it being labelled a dark comedy. Finally at the end you are left dazzled and wanting more. Don't be one of those people who "can't" watch a movie with subtitles. This film deserves to be watched either in selected cinemas or either online streaming services such as Amazon.
